Mother Teresa once said "If you can’t feed a hundred people, then feed just one." Last weekend the people of Bennington fed more than a thousand people through their generous support of Gouging for Good: An Overpriced Superbowl Snack sale to Benefit Meals on Wheels.

We know both individuals and businesses in Bennington are asked to give very often so we are especially grateful that so many graciously supported this fundraising effort. From the many cooks and bakers who shared their culinary skills with us to the local businesses who donated lovely prizes for our silent auction and the many customers who stopped in to buy goodies and make bids and then stayed around to chat and enjoy the music, this fundraiser was a success because so many good people got involved.

There are still some donations coming in but when all is said and done it looks like Gouging for Good will have raised more than $4,200 for Meals on Wheels. That translates into 1,400 meals for needy seniors in Bennington County -- wow!

At a time when economic uncertainty causes concern about how the neediest members of our community are getting by there is much comfort in knowing the people of the greater Bennington area are willing to take care of those who need our help. On behalf of Meals on Wheels, we thank you for your kindness and generosity.

On mental health and guns

The story "Vt. woman locked up in psych ward testifies," appeared in the paper and seemed disturbing at first. But the situation seems to boil down to mental health as authoriteis were thinking the woman, Christina Schumacher, was suicidal.

Mental health Commissioner Paul Dupre said: "What are we going to do, are we going to let somebody kill themselves or harm themselves seriously or harm someone else?"

The recent rash of guns and violence in America and the shooting of innocent people has created this extreme caution by mental health. The gun nuts say that mental health has failed us by allowing crazy people to be loose and with guns. The gun control people say it’s the guns that kill, period. So we end up with the above stated situation. I believe it’s political and all about the two sides exercising their "rights." That’s why it will never end. So in the meantime if you’re out there running around saying you’ll kill yourself and others, etc., guess where you’re going?
