The Hoosick Democratic Committee and Hoosick First announce the following candidates for Town of Hoosick elected offices.
Mark Surdam is running for the position of Hoosick Town Supervisor.
Mark worked as a part time police officer in Hoosick, and for Haynes Ford.
He has been involved in local real estate and property management for a number of years, and currently works at Delurey Sales and Service. He and his wife Mary Wirmusky raised children, John and Kristin, here.
Mark has served as an elected Town Councilman for more than nine years.
About running for supervisor, Mark says "I feel the Town deserves someone who is able and willing to work with town officials, employees and the community as a whole, for one common goal - to better our town.
I will work with my fellow board members and other community leaders to seek and encourage ideas and discussions. I realize that our taxes are high enough and we need to hold the line as much as possible. As far as I am concerned, there is not a better place to raise a family - especially when you look at all we have to offer in such a small community." Michael Hickey is a registered Democrat running for a seat on the Hoosick Town Council. Mike is a lifelong resident of Hoosick Falls, whose family has roots that date back five generations.
Michael graduated from HFCS in 1997 and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management from Cazenovia College. In 2008, he joined Farm Family Insurance where he is employed as a Commercial Lines Underwriter.
Michael served on the Hoosick Falls Village Board for three years. He resigned after purchasing a home in the Town of Hoosick outside the Village where he now lives there with his girlfriend, Angela Cottrell, and their three year old son Oliver Ersel Hickey. Oliver was named after Michael’s father, John "Ersel" Hickey, who passed away in February 2013.
John had a great sense of community that Michael admired. Michael says he aspires to follow in his father’s footsteps of community involvement and service, and is committed to serving the Town of Hoosick with honesty, fairness and sincerity.
Dave Sutton is running for a position on the Hoosick Town Council. Dave is a lifelong resident of West Hoosick. He graduated from HFCS in1983, and from SUNY Cobleskill in 1985 with a degree in ornamental horticulture, with honors. He is married to Amy Sutton.
Dave served as project manager for the family landscape company until 1995, when he founded Suttonscapes LLC, a modest, full service, design-build, landscape construction firm still under his leadership. He is finishing his thirteenth and final year on the HFCS school board (and his seventh year as chair). His main hobby is vocal performance.
Dave says "I hope to work with all concerned people in the community, to preserve our heritage in a fiscally responsible, progressive, optimistic and collaborative way. I do not believe that this community has seen its best days. The young people here continue to show us that almost all things are possible. If the community wills it, I intend to continue to give my all, to the Town of Hoosick, NY." Bill Shiland III is running for the position of Hoosick Highway Superintendent.
Bill says "I have been with the Town of Hoosick Highway Department for eighteen years. I have learned from the best and work with a great crew. I have what it takes to work with our multi-talented road crew and get the job done. I graduated from Hoosick Falls Central and have lived in this town my whole life. My wife Rebecca and I have been married for eight years. We have three wonderful sons - Williams, Andrew and my stepson Ryan Philpott. I am asking for your support on Election Day. Thank you and I look forward to working for you."
