Thanks to our firefighters
I would like to take the time to thank all members of the Bennington Fire Department for their quick and professional response to the tragic fire which occurred on Lincoln Street last week. My home is just two houses away from the inferno and at no time was my property or life threatened due to the professionalism and quick response by all those brave volunteers who took part.
All Bennington residents owe these men and women of our volunteer fire departments a warm and grateful THANK YOU.
Independent school supporters should pony up
How far are supporters of the Independent School in North Bennington going to go in order to get their way? I would like the Banner to clarify their meaning of the April 12, 2013 quote on the front page as they addressed the school closure with a quote "FINAL NAIL IN COFFIN." If you are a non-supporter, they are going to kill you? With the Connecticut school killings it seems this wording is wrong. Supporters of the Independent School speak of such support but still expect all property tax owners to pay costs of the school. This is much different from other schools that have to charge tuition.
Why aren’t supporters of the cause for an independent school willing to put their money where their mouth is? It seems that North Bennington’s attorney should have donated his time rather than having the district spend $15,000 of gifted money to pay his lawyer’s fee! The gifted money was intended for the children of the district, not attorneys.
Wouldn’t it have been better if the people who voted Yes to the independent school (approximately 200) each donated $1,000 to the cause of the independent School? This is a small price when others pay $4,000 tuition to send their children to a private school.
If this is such a great idea, why did law makers immediately pass a new law so this couldn’t be done in the future? If the independent school comes up $600,000 short , I hope Matthew Paterson, Bob Howe, Laurie Elwell and Eva Sutton donate their money and not force property tax owners to cover the expense.
