As I reflect on the incident that occurred this past weekend, I am overjoyed that JoJo was found safe and I am grateful to live in a place of such caring and compassion. I was overwhelmed by the hundreds of community volunteers who came to help and show their support to a little boy and his family during their time of need.

Words cannot express how proud I am to be part of a community that proved in a moment’s notice they are there to help. Hundreds of people gathered, ready and waiting, to search or to assist with the rescue in any possible way.

I want to thank each and every one of the 120 professional volunteers, hundreds of Arlington and Fisher Elementary parents, staff and students as well as community members from Arlington and surrounding towns who searched (some through the night). I also want to acknowledge the Arlington Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and the many local community members and businesses that provided food. A special thank you as well to The Orvis Company who literally opened their doors to the rescue personnel offering food and shelter and a place to do their work.

As principal of Fisher Elementary for the past five years, I’ve witnessed many occasions where people have quietly lent a hand to their neighbor. The acts have been far reaching--helping other towns with relief efforts for Hurricanes Irene and Sandy--and closer to home--our annual day of service and collections of food and money for myriad causes. No one is looking for thanks when they step up in these situations. But know that we do thank you whether you provided food, walked the woods or offered comforting words, and we are extremely grateful for JoJo’s safe return.
