BENNINGTON -- The Vermont Arts Exchange (VAE) announces The Mad Skills Retro Video Game Tournament and the unveiling of "Retro Gamers", an art installation by Bennington School students.
The event will take place at the Gamer’s Grotto on June 11 from 3-5. Retro video games are being dusted off and plugged in and will only be $1 each to play! Each game allows you to be entered in a series of raffles for a chance to win prizes including a $50 gift certificate to Gamer’s Grotto. This is a benefit to raise money for the Bennington School’s art program at VAE.
For the past few months, girls from The Bennington School have been hard at work at VAE creating an amazing art installation for Gamer’s Grotto. Kristen Blaker, an art teacher at VAE, took on this project hoping to connect the students to their community through an expressive, collaborative project. The students have been involved in all aspects of the project, from coming up with an overall theme, creating a design, and implementing the actual product. The students began with the idea of retro video games and collaboratively worked to come up with the design for the installation.
The students, along with art teachers, staff, and volunteers, worked collaboratively to create fourteen "television screens," learning how to layout, design, draw, carve and paint retro video scenes on foam panels. During the project, the students learned much more than artistic skills. Patience, teamwork, giving supportive feedback, and being flexible. The end product is a visual example of how each one of them can be a valuable and positive influence in their community.
