WEST RUPERT -- Planning for a major retrospective and book on the life and work of the late painter Brian Sweetland is underway. Family members are seeking to identify and catalog work by the artist. Do you own or know of someone who owns his paintings? The goal is to identify still-life, portraits and landscapes spanning his career.
Brian Sweetland (1952-2013) painted the nuances of favorite places in different ways at different times. Sweetland’s confident hand laid down layers of paint, creating luminous, opalescent effects that please the eye from across a room or right up close. He painted every day, out-of-doors, year-round. As well as the atmospheric light, there is structure; he was a fine draftsman, whose still-lifes have the same delicacy of subject and light touch.
Mary Beth Sweetland, sister of Brian, along with siblings Bill, Chuck, Ruth and Judy are organizing the exhibition and publication. As Mary Beth said "we miss Brian greatly and want to celebrate and remember his contribution as a pioneer in the reemergence of classical painting."
Owners of Sweetland’s paintings are asked to contact Mary Beth Sweetland at 802-394-2998 or by email at firstname.lastname@example.org. The mailing address is 262 Hidden Valley Road, West Rupert, VT 05776. The initial work on the project is to photograph and inventory the paintings. The 12-week exhibition is planned for late July through October in the Wilson Museum at the Southern Vermont Arts Center.
