BENNINGTON -- To celebrate its new name, the Greater Bennington Peace and Justice Center, formerly known as the Peace Resource Center, invites the community to a special performance of the Bread & Puppet Theater. The event will take place at the Mount Anthony Union Middle School on Saturday, Dec. 7, at 5 p.m. Admission is free but donations will be gratefully accepted.
Renowned for its lampooning of federal government policies and actions, through the use of giant puppets and costumed actors, the Bread & Puppet performance, titled: "Total This and That Circus" will include some elements of daffodil combat forces battling F-35s, the miraculous birth of a calf, a giant face trying to see who’s running back and forth between his ears, the tar sands pipeline, some very tall people with wooden legs, all kinds of animals from zebras to some very interfering turkeys and much more. All acts are accompanied by the circus band.
The Bread & Puppet Theater is one of the oldest non-profit, self-supporting theatrical companies in the U.S. The theater has been enacting its radical utopian vision in cardboard and cloth for fifty years, from the spectacle of its larger-than-life puppets at Vietnam War protests in New York City to the pageantry of its long-running (over 25 years) annual event, "Our Domestic Resurrection Circus" in Glover, Vermont.
Founded in 1983, the Greater Bennington Peace and Justice Center is committed to working cooperatively with its members and other partners to advance peacemaking both locally and globally, build understanding and solidarity among people and support peace-building economies.
The group meets on the first Thursday of each month at 6:15 p.m.; all are welcome to a potluck supper which is followed by discussion and business. Meetings are held at the Unitarian Universalist Meetinghouse at 108 School St. in Bennington. Among other events, GBPJC has sponsored a monthly film series, vigils for peace at Bennington’s Four Corners, and has a "peace contingent" in the annual Battle Day Parade.
