Fiction writing contest for Fourth through Eighth Graders based on The Spare Room by Jenny Land
ST. JOHNSBURY -- Brigantine Media is pleased to announce The Spare Room fiction writing contest for students in grades 4 through 8. To enter, participants submit a fictional piece of writing -- a diary entry or a letter -- based on one of the characters in the novel The Spare Room by Jenny Land. The contest is open to students who reside, attend school, or are homeschooled in Vermont. Winners will be selected in each of two divisions: 4th-6th grade and 7th-8th grade. First through fourth place winners in each division will receive cash prizes of $100, $75, $50, and $25.
To make it easy for students to enter, Brigantine Media is offering a free copy of The Spare Room to all school and public libraries in Vermont. The Spare Room is an historical novel set on a nineteenth-century Vermont farm during the time leading to the Civil War. Middle schools across Vermont have used the book successfully to enrich their study of this period.
The contest runs until Nov. 14. Winners will be announced Dec. 12, and an awards ceremony will be held Jan.17, 2014 at St. Johnsbury Academy in St. Johnsbury.
Complete contest rules and the fictional essay prompt are on the book’s website, thespareroombook.com.

Plein-Air Vermont, the outdoor artist event that graces The Shires of Vermont in early Sept., is looking for host homes for participating professional artists who come here from all over the eastern half of the U.S. These artists will arrive on Tuesday, Sept. 3, and they will paint outdoors, exhibit and sell their framed work through Sunday, Sept. 8. The good news is that they are delightful and very appreciative individuals who only require a bed, a washcloth and towel. No meals -- not even breakfast. They leave the house at the crack of dawn and paint all day long and often into the evening. Then they sleep. If you would consider hosting an artist or would like more information, contact Jeanne Conner at email@example.com or 802-447-3810.
