Agencies offer discounted home energy check-ups

BENNINGTON -- Efficiency Vermont and its partners are offering a discounted professional energy audit for homeowners. Funds are now available for Vermont homeowners to get a professional energy audit for the low price of $100. This service usually costs between $350 and $500.

As part of the audit, the homeowner will receive a print-out of recommendations along with how much can be saved on home heating costs. There is no obligation to follow through on any of the recommendations.

This can save an average of 375 gallons of heating fuel annually, eliminate drafts, and make a home warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. A BPI-certified contractor will use a blower door test and an infrared camera to help determine where a home is losing heat and how much heat is being lost.

This deal is offered because Efficiency Vermont and its partners are trying to motivate people to weatherize their homes. The goal is 3 percent in 2013. There is low-interest financing available.

If you are interested in learning more about this service and/or would like to sign up, call Linda Putney, local coordinator for the Vermont Home Energy Challenge, at 442-8829.
