No. Benn. resident fatally wounded in crash
NORTH BENNINGTON -- Police reported a fatal motor vehicle accident involving a pedestrian who was struck while crossing the road to check his mail Saturday morning.
Henry H. Chalifoux, 79, a long-time local resident and hairdresser, was gravely injured and became unresponsive while en route to Southwestern Vermont Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased.
In a written release, Bennington Police Lt. Lloyd N. Dean reported the incident was called in to police at about 11:05 a.m. Police and Bennington Rescue responded to the scene of the accident on Vermont Route 67A/North Bennington Road, just west of College Drive, the entrance to Bennington College.
Upon their arrival, first responders found Chalifoux critically injured along the side of the road. Police said Georgianna Carter, 86, also of North Bennington, had been driving her 2003 Ford Focus westbound when she struck Chalifoux. Bennington Rescue attempted to transfer him by ambulance to the emergency department at SVMC, but police said he became unresponsive during transport and was pronounced deceased at the emergency room.
An autopsy was requested by the Bennington County State's Attorney and police said their preliminary investigation had not determined fault in the accident, which remains under investigation pending further information and the results of the autopsy. Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact either Dean or police Sgt. David L. Dutcher at the police station at 802-442-1030.
Chalifoux is survived by his wife of many years and fellow cosmetologist Dolores Chalifoux, in addition to other family. The couple opened Hairport hair salon on North Street in Bennington in 1978, followed later by the Academy of Cosmetology in North Bennington in 1994.
