CAMBRIDGE, N.Y. -- Cafeteria workers at Cambridge Central School prepared meals in the school's newly refurbished kitchen for the first time Monday -- with the students back to eating in the cafeteria -- after months of working out of a temporary kitchen behind the school and transporting meals to the auditorium.
Part of the school's ongoing $8 million capital project, the top-to-bottom renovation of the original circa-1952 kitchen included basic code compliance and other work, but Lunchroom Manager Amy Braun, at left in the photo, said new equipment would also allow for more varied and healthful meals.
Thanks to revised cafeteria lines, daily breakfast and lunch service should also flow more smoothly. "We're all going to be here, consolidated and efficient," Braun said. While pupils had fun with the earlier change of pace, Braun said they were excited to be back in the renovated space. Through this week, staff are planning students' favorites to celebrate.
Throughout the work, school administrators and board members had only praise for the lunchroom staff. "Speaking about good things people are doing for (our) kids ... these people are really getting the job done," said elementary Principal Colleen Lester at January's board meeting, speaking to the extra effort put in by staff during the duration of the cafeteria and kitchen work, which began last summer and proceeded as scheduled despite a few hiccups along the way.
