CALVERTON, N.Y. (AP) -- The U.S. Navy is set to commission its newest destroyer with the name of a Medal of Honor recipient from New York killed in Afghanistan in 2005.
A ceremony is scheduled for Saturday in New York City to commission the USS Michael Murphy.
The 29-year-old Long Island native was the first American awarded the Medal of Honor in Afghanistan.
He was killed along with two fellow SEALs during an ambush. He's credited with exposing himself to enemy fire to call in a request for assistance.
Sixteen of his rescuers also died when their helicopter was shot down by a rocket-propelled grenade. The only SEAL to survive has since written a book about the battle.
A movie starring Mark Wahlberg and Taylor Kitsch is currently being made about the firefight.
