BENNINGTON — The new roundabout on Northside Drive is open to traffic.

Drivers encountered work crews, police details, temporary signage, orange traffic cones and some delays this summer at the busy intersection in front of the Northside Plaza.

Just before 4 p.m. Friday afternoon, traffic was moving through the roundabout uninterrupted.

The project at the four-way intersection of Northside Drive (Route 7A), Emma Street and Plaza Drive replaced traffic signals and protected turning lanes with a single-lane roundabout. Construction began in June and included a truck detour that lasted from two to three weeks.

"Splitting lanes" channel traffic into the circular roadway and around a center island. Two flashing pedestrian signals were installed at the crosswalk for the Northside Plaza entrance. Plants that were placed in the roundabout's central island include "bar harbor" and "blue rug" juniper; and "nugget" and "little devil" ninebark.

The project was managed and funded by BLS Bennington, LLC, the entity which owns the plaza and is behind the new Walmart. Bast Hatfield Construction of Clifton Park, N.Y. served as general contractor. The new Walmart is scheduled to open on Aug. 24.
