BENNINGTON — A Park Street man is accused of strangling a woman on a number of occasions.
Steven L. Radcliffe, 32, pleaded not guilty Tuesday in Vermont Superior Court Criminal Division Bennington Unit to first degree aggravated domestic assault with a previous conviction, first-degree aggravated domestic assault, and a misdemeanor charge of interfering with access to emergency services. He was ordered held without bail while the case is pending.
According to an affidavit by Bennington Police, on July 29 a woman reported that two days prior to Easter, Radcliffe assaulted her by punching her three times in the face, leaving her with a black eye. She went to her phone to call for help but he took it from her and would not let her leave the room.
She then described an incident that happened near the end of May where Radcliffe threatened her with a knife. Around that same time, she was putting on makeup to go out with a friend. This upset Radcliffe, who forcibly wiped makeup from her eyes using his thumbs. He then strangled her after further struggle.
She said Radcliffe has strangled her before, so often that she can tell when he's about to do it by his body language and mannerisms. She said he has assaulted her dozens of times over the course of a year and a half. She has not reported these incidents because she was afraid of him.
The affidavit did not appear to contain any statement from Radcliffe.
