BENNINGTON — The new Walmart was evacuated on Thursday afternoon after smoke was reported inside the building.
Walmart employees notified authorities at about 4 p.m. that smoke was coming from a cooler unit inside the store, according to Bennington Rural Fire Department Chief Wayne Davis. Employees were evacuated, but later returned to retrieve their things. No one was injured in the incident. The cause is undetermined.
The Bennington Rural Fire Department responded to the scene with four pumper trucks and one rescue unit. Bennington police also responded.
Firefighters set up a fan to eject smoke from the building. An electrician for the company was also on the scene. Firefighters also discovered a propane tank that was leaking, apparently because it had been overfilled.
The new store on Northside Drive, which was built directly behind the existing one, is tentatively scheduled to open sometime next month.
