BENNINGTON — The Bennington School District Board has unanimously selected Dr. Michael Mugits as the next principal of Molly Stark Elementary School.
The term of employment will begin on July 1 of this year. Mugits will replace Donna Mackenzie-King, who announced her retirement from the position earlier this year. Mackenzie-King was the principal of the now defunct Catamount Elementary School until 2007, when she became principal at Molly Stark. She also spent one year as principal of both Catamount and Bennington Elementary School.
"My name is Michael Mugits," he said, addressing the board, "and I have spent 33 years as a principal at a variety of levels, from pre-K through 12. I most recently served as a superintendent for five years at a very, very small school district, with a single building K-12 with 340 learners. Among my greatest achievements, I was very fortunate to become a grandfather to a little boy who was born here in Bennington in July. So, it's exciting for me to take the next step and join a leadership team here in Bennington. It's a pleasure, and I look forward to working with you."
"Good luck and congratulations," said Vice-Chairman George Sleeman, who was acting as chairman due to Ken Swierad feeling under the weather.
"I'd like to thank the board members who served on that committee," said board member Jackie Prue, "I think you brought forward excellent candidates."
According to the nomination form submitted to the board, 17 applicants were reviewed and three were interviewed for the position. The selection committee was made up of board members Marie DeCoff, Jackie Kelly, and Genevieve Plunkett, Monument Elementary principal Donna Cauley, Valeria Crossley, Shari Sargent, Dottie Marcoux, Chaila Sekora, and Nicole Siclari.
Mugits received his bachelor's degree in elementary education from the University of Maine at Machias, his master's in school administration from Plymouth State College, in New Hampshire, and his doctorate in education from Sage Graduate Schools in New York. He worked as a teacher and principal at various schools from 1975 to 2010, then superintendent of the Green Island Union Free School District in New York. He left that position last summer.
Mugits regularly updates a blog, which can be found at educationalalchemist.blogspot.com. He is also active on Twitter, @mmugits.
