BENNINGTON — A fire burned two acres of vegetation at Willow Park Wednesday afternoon.
"We're thinking it's going to be a bad year for brush fires," said Kevin Mattison, first assistant chief of the Bennington Rural Fire Department, who responded to the blaze with about 20 other BRFD members at 2:15 p.m. He said the lack of snow this winter and the coming warm weather will likely make for dry conditions ideal for grass fires. The cause of this one, which began on Route 7 before spreading to Willow Park, is unknown. Mattison said he suspects a lit cigarette or something similar, but can not be sure. The fire did little in the way of damage and was under control after about half an hour. Two pump trucks and a brush truck responded.
