BENNINGTON — Starting on Jan. 6, Southwestern Vermont Health Care will once again offer free, gentle yoga classes for cancer survivors and members of their support teams.
The classes have been offered at the hospital for over 15 years, said Rebecca Hewson-Steller, RN, who has helped organize the program since she first began working there 13 years ago. The hour-long classes will take place at 5 p.m. each Wednesday in Conference Room C of the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center, and are offered at no cost, she said, although pre-registration is required. The program is funded through the Cancer Center Patient Resource Fund.
Classes will be taught by Ali Wassick and Jane Schaeffer of the Yoga Place in Bennington. According to a release from the hospital, "Participants will learn basic balancing postures, breathing, and visualization techniques for relaxation, stress reduction, flexibility, and strength."
The Yoga Place is located at 532 Main St. in Bennington, with an entrance on Pleasant Street, and has been operating since 2003. Their classes include offerings for beginners, people with bigger bodies, and those who like to use chairs for stability. According to their website, benningtonyoga.com, they "provide a beautiful, light, airy and spacious environment for healing, personal well-being and personal development. Our teachers cultivate safety and warmth in their teaching. Classes are a challenging contemplative blend of asana, pranayama, and meditation and are rooted in the richness of yogic tradition as it has been passed down over thousands of years."
