BRATTLEBORO — The Brattleboro Retreat is now in better standing with the feds after the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services restored the psychiatric hospital to "deemed status."

The Retreat was released from a systems improvement agreement it was under since October 2014.

"This news comes just weeks after a full and unannounced survey conducted by federal and state regulators between Nov. 16 and 19 found the Retreat to be in compliance with all CMS Conditions of Participation," a press release from the hospital stated. "This is a milestone the Retreat had been working toward for more than a year under the systems improvement agreement."

That agreement saw hospital staff and administrators "successfully" design and implement performance improvement measures related to patient rights, the hospital's governing body, physical environment and quality assurance programs, the hospital said.

According to the hospital, Retreat officials are looking at options with the state to fully renovate a unit where adolescents receive inpatient care as this was identified as a longer term goal under the agreement.

CMS and the Retreat's agreement allowed for the continued operation of the hospital while implementing specific terms to address immediate concerns, a letter from Associate Regional Administrator for CMS' Northeast Consortium J. William Roberson stated.


The agreement also allowed the groups to "identify underlying system issues and redesign processes, policies and procedures and other defined improvement activities to affect positive clinical outcomes for the patients," Roberson said.

"Based on the findings of the full survey, your hospital has achieved and maintained condition-level compliance to this date. As a result, CMS is restoring Brattleboro Retreat to have deemed status under the Joint Commission," he wrote. "In addition, based on the impressive progress and strides the hospital has taken over the past year, CMS releases your hospital from the systems improvement agreement, effective Dec. 1, 2015."
