BENNINGTON — Southern Vermont College has announced a new scholarship that will make the college more affordable for local students.
The college said the Good Neighbor Scholarship will be worth $11,000 per year, which brings the cost of attending the school more in line with state universities. The scholarship is available to all qualified students who either have been permanent residents in Bennington or Windham counties for at least 2 years; have graduated within two years from any private or public high school in Bennington or Windham counties, or from the Hoosac School, Hoosick Falls Central School, Cambridge Central School, Berlin Central School, Mount Greylock Regional High School, Drury High School, or Charles H. McCann Technical High School; students who currently attend or have within two years graduated or completed 30 hours from Community College of Vermont; and students who have earned an associate's degree from Landmark College.
"Southern Vermont College is a vital part of the Bennington community and it's important that we be good neighbors to prospective students and their families in the area, by making college more affordable and accessible for them," said SVC President David Evans. "We're proud to be the alma mater for many hardworking alumni who have chosen to stay in the surrounding area, alums who are on the police force, are the nurses and radiologic technicians at the hospital and doctor's offices, and local business owners; this is a way of honoring them and expressing our gratitude to the community that has supported the college. Higher education can be a cooperative local effort, and we want to highlight our strong relationship with Bennington and the surrounding area and help students from here find a place at SVC.
The total cost of tuition and fees for a year at SVC without the scholarship is about $34,000, according to the college's website. In-state tuition and fees at the University of Vermont is estimated at about $31,000.
Good Neighbor scholarships will be available for students applying for the 2016-2017 school year. Students will have to re-apply for the scholarship annually. For more information about eligibility, call the SVC admissions office at 802-447-6300.
