NORTH BENNINGTON -- Paran Recreations is preparing for its annual "Dessert Cabaret," by seeking out business and member dessert donations.
Set for Saturday, August 2, at 6 p.m., the dessert buffet and open mic cabaret will feature all-you-can-eat confections from local restaurants and residents with all the extras for $8 a person. The rain date is set for Sunday, August 3, at 6 p.m.
"Everyone who comes always has a good time and is always very complimentary," said Paran Recreations director Marlene Driscoll. "It's special because I don't know anyone else around here that offers anything like this. It's a very pretty evening event."
Illuminated paper bags will line the pathways and docks, which Driscoll said makes it one of Paran's more scenic events, and brings in at least 150 people every year.
In previous years, the dessert cabaret has served as a fundraiser for things such as the installation of the volleyball court.
Since most of the event's inventory comes from donations, almost the entire amount of each ticket sold this year will go to the fund for the second pavilion at the lake. Fundraising for the pavilion since May, Paran Recreations has already reached $6,000 of its $15,000 goal.
Not only are desserts and soft drinks included in the ticket price, but so is some community entertainment. Already listed with seven entries, a sign-up sheet is available at the Lake Paran snack bar for anyone who wishes to show off their musical talent.
"The cabaret gives an opportunity to people and kids who wouldn't otherwise perform in something like a talent show It's very casual," Driscoll said.
The snack bar, beach and craft rentals will be open with extended event hours during the dessert cabaret.
Dessert and food donations for the event in the past have come from the Blue Benn Diner, Dunkin' Donuts, Kevin's Sports Pub, the Crazy Russian Girls Bakery, Hannaford and Price Chopper.
Yet to come this year at Lake Paran is the stone-skipping competition on September 20, for which a man from the Guinness Book of World Records will attend and compete with advanced skippers. The event will feature amateur and children's' competitions as well as a band and pig roast.
Also coming up this year is the ‘Harvest Party,' which includes a potluck, entertainment from multiple bluegrass bands, pumpkin carving and a potato carving on October 4.
