BENNINGTON -- A local man was held for lack of $1,000 bail after he was accused of punching his 16-year-old son in the face, causing the boy’s nose to bleed.
Ralph R. Brown Jr., 45, of Bennington, pleaded not guilty Tuesday in Vermont Superior Court to a felony charge of second degree aggravated domestic assault. Court records indicate he is being held at the Rutland jail.
According to an affidavit by Bennington Police Sgt. Michael Plusch, on June 13 police received information alleging that Brown had punched his 16-year-old son in the face.
The boy was interviewed on June 16. He said his father is verbally abusive towards him, calling him fat, ugly, and stupid. He said Brown hits him all the time, with the last time being on June 11. He said they were alone and nothing led up to the assault. He said his father, since last year, has been hitting him for no apparent reason.
The child’s mother also gave a statement saying Brown is abusive toward him.
Police arrested Brown and the affidavit contained no information about whether or not he gave a statement to police.
Brown was convicted of domestic assault in 1999, said police.
