POWNAL -- The winners of this year’s Poppy Post Contest were announced last week at a Memorial Day ceremony at Pownal Elementary School.
Every year, the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 90 Pownal Post challenges students in grades 1-6 to participate in the poster design contest. The winners received a cash prize and poppies, and all students received a participation ribbon and a pencil. Present to present the awards post president Linda Moxley, secretary Caroline Martel, sergeant at arms Virginia Leon, and past president and current poppy chairman, Lisa Bump.
A winner was announced for each grade level. Brodie Morin of Mrs. Bush’s first grade class, Brogan Pudvar from Mrs. Hunt’s second grade class, Joshua Worthington from Mr. Robertson’s third grade class, Zaynah Amidon from Mrs. Strange’s fourth grade class, Charlie Gratton from Mrs. Washburn’s fifth grade class, and Garrett Joly of Mrs. Cristofolini’s class were announced as the winners, with third grader Matthew Reynolds of Mrs. Kaercher’s class, receiving the honorable mention. Fifth grader Devin Brown, of Mr. LaBombard’s class, received the Auxiliary Post 90 award, and sixth grader Kylee Hall, of Ms. Whelan’s class, took home the grand prize.
The program began with the Pledge of Allegiance, led by Mrs. Crawford’s kindergarten class, followed by the fifth and sixth grade chorus singing the national anthem. Various students read poems, sang songs, and participated in a flag etiquette lesson from George Guile of Bennington American Legion Post 13. The program ended with an all-school sing-along of "America the Beautiful," directed by music teacher Colleen Frangella.
