HOOSICK, N.Y. -- Curtis Lumber will hold its fifth annual "PetAPalooza" on Saturday, June 14 at many of its retail locations across New York and Vermont, to give local animal shelters an outlet for community presence and pet adoption.

Over 400 pets found homes during the event last year. Advertising and marketing coordinator Jennifer Stickney said Curtis Lumber hopes to find homes for just as many cats and dogs this year, with contributions from 80 animal shelters to 12 of Curtis Lumber’s 21 locations.

Berkshire Humane Society, Second Chance Animal Shelter and the Animal Support Project will have cats, dogs, rabbits, birds and more available for adoption for as little as half the cost at the Hoosick Curtis Lumber location, 4915 N.Y. Route 7, during regular business hours from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

"We help make it more affordable to adopt a pet with lower adoption fees than adopting directly from an animal shelter," Stickney said.

West Mountain Animal Hospital veterinarians will be at the event to provide free initial examinations for every pet adoption. West Mountain and the supporting animal shelters will help offer discounts off other veterinary, grooming, pet sitting and training services.

From select locations, there will be 50/50 raffles, food and live radio broadcasts. Animals will be in an open area to allow families to familiarize themselves with pets without a barrier. "This is more of a community event. Animals for adoption are usually in cages.

But when animals are out in the open, it gives kids and families a much more intimate experience with them," Stickney said.

Curtis Lumber owners, Jay and Kendra Curtis, have taken many abused animals under their care, and hold the "PetAPalooza" to make pets in need of homes more visible. They use the event to advance the names of local shelters using their business name, and publicizing the message to spay and neuter pets to avoid presence of unwanted strays.
