BENNINGTON -- A Benmont Avenue man is being accused of exposing himself to a woman while offering her a ride in his vehicle.
William J. Miles Jr., 55, pleaded not guilty Tuesday in Vermont Superior Court to one felony count of lewd and lascivious conduct. He was released under the conditions he not have contact with the woman, and report to the Bennington Police Department on a daily basis.
According to an affidavit by Bennington Police Sgt. Michael Plusch, on May 21 a woman told police she was walking south on Benmont Avenue when a silver Jeep Grand Cherokee pulled up next to her and asked her if she wanted a ride. She was on the passenger side of the vehicle and could see in. According to her, the man’s genitals were exposed and his hand was in his lap. She cursed at him, and he sped away.
She used her cell phone to write down the license plate number, which police learned was associated with Miles. The woman said she did not know the man, and added that he was wearing black wire-rim glasses.
On May 23, Plusch went to speak with Miles at his house. Miles said he slowed his Jeep down to ask a woman if she wanted a ride, but she declined and he went on. He said he normally drives with one hand on the wheel and the other on the shifting lever.
Miles said he did not expose his genitals.
According to police, Miles was convicted in 2009 of a misdemeanor count of prohibited acts.
