BENNINGTON -- By a margin of 600 to 388, voters approved a $13,007,574 Bennington School District budget at a special meeting Tuesday.

"I'm very happy with the vote," said Catherine McClure, Southwest Vermont Supervisory Union superintendent, after learning the vote results Tuesday evening at the Bennington Firehouse. "I'm relieved, and I thank everyone for coming out and supporting the budget."

The original budget was voted down on Town Meeting Day in March by a margin of 989 to 1,028. The latest version of the budget reflected $37,502 the BSD board had trimmed from the original.

McClure noted that the result was fitting as Tuesday was Teacher Appreciation Day.

She said, "I know having a special election is difficult. So thank you to everyone that voted -- it's appreciated."

Bennington Town Clerk Tim Corcoran noted, "It was an extremely light vote" Tuesday with just under 1,000 of Bennington's roughly 8,500 registered voters turning out.
