HOOSICK FALLS -- On Saturday, over 200 children and adults came out to Woods Park in Hoosick Falls for a 5k run/walk to raise money for "Healers from Here," a team of 22 runners in the Relay for Life of Bennington County.

The annual Relay for Life will take place on Saturday, June 21, overnight into Sunday at the Mount Anthony Union High School track in Bennington. The annual event is a part of many across the globe that brings people together to honor cancer survivors, remember people who've been taken by cancer and to raise money for the American Cancer Society.

Gretchen Yonconish of "Healers from Here" started the annual 5k last year to raise money for her team. Last year, the run/walk put over $2,500 toward the team's pledge. This year, Yonconish raised over $5,000, which will be added to by the money the other team members raise.

Yonconish started registering people in January for $15 a person. Every month the registration price increased, up to $30 on the day of the 5k.

"It's only our second year here, but I'm happy with the turnout," said Yonconish, who is also the fundraiser chair of the relay committee. "We used facebook, but mostly word of mouth to get people from the community here."

Chair of the relay in Bennington County, Billy Jo Tifft said she likes that Yonconish and her team raise pledge money by bringing the Hoosick Falls community together. "Fundraising is the biggest thing that sponsors our relay. All funds coming in will go straight to the relay," she said.

The "Healers from Here" 5k started at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday with a Zumba dance led by Darci Ordway from Tag Team Zumba and Andrea Malinoski from Zumba Fitness, followed by the 5k and a kid's run.
