BENNINGTON -- Two people are facing felony charges for allegedly selling a drug known as "Molly."
According to an affidavit by Bennington Police Cpl. Andy Hunt, "Molly" is the name of a drug containing cocaine, methamphetamine, and other substances.
Robert E. Caron III, 20, of Pownal pleaded not guilty Monday in Vermont Superior Court to a felony count of methamphetamine sale, a misdemeanor count of methamphetamine possession, and a felony count of conspiracy to sell drugs. He was released under the condition he not contact Kanaan Gifford, 19, of Bennington, who pleaded not guilty last week to a felony conspiracy charge.
Hunt wrote in his affidavit that on Feb. 19 he received word people were selling Molly around the area of Greenview Drive. He went there around 6:45 p.m. and saw a group of five males who appeared to be taking pains not to look at him or his vehicle. He saw the group split in two and so he approached the group of three to ask them about the complaint he had received.
They said they were coming from "Bobby’s house" and did not know the other two males well.
Hunt then went to speak to one of the two males, identified as Caron. He told Hunt he was looking for a pack of cigarettes he had dropped. He also told Hunt the names of the other three males and said he knew them well. Caron said they were just out for a walk and had not come from anyone’s house.
Hunt wrote that Caron’s eyes went wide and he began to shake when asked if he had anything illegal on him. Hunt was given permission to search Caron and found $1,000 in cash in his pocket along with a pack of cigarettes containing a brown substance identified as Molly.
On Caron’s cell phone were messages to several people saying things like, "she’s back," and "m’s back" and that it was $70 per gram.
Some of the messages on the cell phone were from Gifford giving Caron directions to his house. When located, Gifford admitted to making arraignments to distribute Molly to Caron.
