POWNAL -- A special election will be held to fill a seat on the Select Board left vacant by the passing of a board member in February.
Petitions are due at the Town Clerk's Office by 5 p.m. March 31, said Town Clerk Karen Burrington. She said Jason Olansky has returned a completed petition while Betty Baker, who ran for the board at Town Meeting Day unsuccessfully, has taken out paperwork to run. Petitions can be picked up at Burrington's office on Center Street.
The election will be held on May 6, said Burrington, however the board has yet to officially warn the date. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Pownal Center Fire House.
The open seat is a two-year unexpired term. It was held by Dale Palmer, who passed away from a heart attack while shoveling snow. Palmer first came on the board after being appointed to fill a seat left vacant by Don Prouty, who died while in office.
Baker, currently a town auditor, received 140 votes at Town Meeting Day. She was running for one of two open seats which were won by incumbent Rich Ryder, and Henry Strohmaier who has past experience on the board. Nelson Brownell was also elected, beating Mike George who had held a one-year seat on the board but ran against Brownell for a three-year seat. Brownell had taken a year off and is currently the board's chairman.
