ARLINGTON -- Fisher Elementary School Principal Deanne Lacoste announced Thursday night at the Arlington School Board meeting that a $20,000 check from an anonymous donor was received this week and would be put towards "phase two" of the school's ongoing playground reconstruction project.
Lacoste said she was stunned by the generous gift.
"The donor's generosity is just a dream come true to all of us who have been working on this project," she said.
According to Lacoste, the donor was inspired to contribute to the project after recently reading of the school's efforts to raise over $34,000 before Dec. 1.
"They realized we were under a time crunch to order the equipment before the deadline and wanted to make sure that would happen for us, and it has," she said.
The donation follows a recent $10,000 gift from local plastics manufacturer Mack Molding.
Lacoste acknowledged that both gifts were vital to the completion of the project.
"We knew if we could take advantage of the sale this fall that we had a chance to complete phase one," she said.
According to Lacoste, phase one, which will be completed over the upcoming winter break in December, will include a new multi-student playground structure, an arch swing set and a 10-spin merry-go-round.
"With both the Mack gift and the anonymous gift, plus what we are raising through PTG (Parent Teacher Group) projects and other donations, we now have a chance to complete phase two of this project by next September.
Lacoste said at the meeting that the PTG has raised $17,000 to date and that with the anonymous donation, well over $12,000 has been raised for "phase two" of the project.
According to Lacoste, the school will continue to accept donations for phase two of the playground project, which will include additional stand-alone pieces of equipment and a slide.
