CAMBRIDGE, N.Y. -- Following nearly $3,000 in vandalism damage, the Cambridge Tribesman Booster Club snack shack is back up and running thanks to support from the community and local businesses.
Nearly $3,000 in damage was done several weeks ago, by three local teenagers.
Parents of Pee Wee Football players discovered the damage the following morning, prior to the homecoming football game. Broken windows and tipped-over deep fryers were the beginning of the vandalism. Oil covered the floor and food that wasn't ruined was stolen.
"I can't say enough about how this regional community has responded," said Deb Brownell, booster club president in a statement.
Receiving donations from local residents without children in school, and from people living outside of the district, Brownell praised the outpouring of support.
Morcon Inc., a local paper company that converts tissue and napkin products for retail sale, donated $1,000 to the effort. Recently purchased by Joseph Raccuia, the company changed hands only several days before the incident. Noting that he feels strongly about supporting the community, the president and CEO said he values the time and support given to youth in Cambridge.
"I'm pleased that we can help them with our financial support," said Raccuia, who was outspoken in his intention to be a positive presence in the town after his purchase.
The Cambridge Faculty Association also contributed to the cause, giving $500 toward the cleaning and repairs.
"We wanted them to know how much we, as teachers and community members, value all they do," said Donna Phinney, president of the CFA.
"We've gone from feeling pretty low to feeling pretty great," Brownell said. "The holiday spirit came early this year."
NaCarlos Horsey, 19, was charged with felony burglary in the incident and sent to Washington County Jail after being unable to meet the $25,000 bail. He is currently awaiting grand jury action, set for Thursday, according to Cambridge-Greenwich Police Chief George Bell. Two other teens determined to be involved were remanded to family court.
