BENNINGTON -- When you're feeling down before the holidays, who you gonna call? Well, one option may be the Emeritus Senior Living Community's BluesBusters.
Aimed at helping seniors through what can be a very emotional time of year, the BluesBusters are a group of experts from Emeritus at Fillmore Pond who will be visiting area seniors in their homes over the next month. The home visits will include a meal, a complimentary wellness check, and the sharing of tools and resources to help the seniors fight depression.
"From experience, we know that for seniors, this time of year can be a trigger," said Lynne Stratton, executive director of Emeritus at Fillmore Pond, in a press release. "Increased hours of darkness can lower their spirits. Additionally they may be thinking about how the inability to travel will keep them from spending the holidays with family. For those who have lost spouses or others dear to them, they might be worrying about getting through seasonal festivities without their loved ones at their side," she said.
According to a study by the Geriatric Mental Health Foundation, 15 percent of Americans over the age of 65 suffer from depression.
Jennifer Hill, the community relations director at Emeritus at Fillmore Pond, said the BluesBusters program evolved out of a quarterly complimentary wellness outreach campaign that Emeritus runs, called Home Visits.
Since the BluesBusters program started last week, Hill herself has visited 12 homes. Not all of the seniors are suffering from depression, said Hill. Some are "fine, but lonely. It's nice for them to have company."
The program is also providing five seniors, nominated by the community, with activity cards that will allow them to attend six activities at Emeritus at Fillmore Pond, free of charge. Activities the community offers include meals, classes, concerts, and parties.
Emeritus at Fillmore Pond is part of Emeritus Senior Living, the largest assisted living and memory care provider in the United States, according to their press release, with nearly 54,000 residents in 510 communities nationwide.
