BENNINGTON -- A family-owned transmission repair service is back in the area after being gone for five years.
Karen and Tony Urbon of Urbon Transmissions and Complete Auto Care have reopened their business at 206 Harwood Hill Road, next to Morse Block.
According to Karen Urbon, their business, which opened in 1991, was originally located in North Hoosick, N.Y.
The shop offers the same line of services that it used to, including oil changes, brake repairs and everything in between, with an emphasis on transmission repair and reconstruction.
"We were in North Hoosick for 20 years," she said. "Then, in 2008, we decided we wanted to try living in Florida, so we moved."
The couple was gone five years before deciding to return to their northern roots.
"We missed the sense of community here," Urbon said, "Our friends, our neighbors."
Over the past few weeks, the Urbons have been busy readying their new garage space for customers.
They returned to the area in September, but this is their first week in business.
Tony Urbon explained that he is master certified, with 40 years of experience, in all areas of auto repair, but is most proud of being the sole transmission repair shop in the area.
He hopes that the re-opening of his shop will be an added convenience to the community.
"Now people with transmission problems don't have to travel all the way to Albany for service," Urbon said. "We're here, we're local, and we can do it right."
According to Urbon, his transmission repair work is guaranteed for two years following service.
"I fix it right the first time," he said, "I think that's important."
Karen Urbon noted that the response from the automotive community in Bennington upon their return has been positive to say the least.
"People are so glad to see that he (Tony) is back in town," she said. "He went to a car dealership on Monday and got two jobs right off the bat. That was great."
The Urbons invite anyone suspecting transmission problems to visit their shop for a free test drive.
Urbon Transmissions and Complete Auto Care is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
