BENNINGTON -- A man who was convicted in 2003 of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl is now being accused of inappropriately touching a child between 2005 and 2007.
Jeremy Amidon, 35, of Silver Street, pleaded not guilty Monday to lewd and lascivious conduct with a child. He was released under a 24-hour curfew at his residence and is not allowed contact with the alleged victim.
According to an affidavit by Bennington Police Detective Anthony Silvestro, on Sept. 17 he spoke to a 15-year-old girl who said Amidon touched her in a private area while she was standing next to the bed he was laying on. She said this happened when she was in the third grade, and that Amidon threatened to kill her mother if she told anyone.
She told police she was reporting the incident now because a family member had asked if there was something wrong with her. She had told another family member before, but that person had left the state.
Silvestro said he spoke to Amidon via telephone. Amidon got upset and said he would only speak to police with his wife and others present, because the last time he talked to the cops he spent a number of years in jail. He refused to meet with Silvestro and was later arrested at his residence.
Because of the previous sex offense, if convicted on the new charge Amidon could face between five years and the rest of his life in prison.
