SHAFTSBURY -- The chairman of the Select Board will soon be resigning because he is moving out of state.
"It’s because I have accepted a position with another company in Michigan," said Craig Bruder, who plans to make the resignation effective Sept. 30 so he can remain board chairman should an emergency meeting be held.
Bruder, who is currently employed by Church Insurance in Bennington, was appointed to the board four years ago after another member resigned. He was recently elected to a two-year term left vacant by former board Chairman Lon McClintock. One year remains on Bruder’s term, and the board is seeking letters of interest from people who wish to fill it.
The appointee will serve until March, at which time they must be elected to fill what is left on the term.
Bruder has been in Shaftsbury for nine years. He said he is from Michigan originally and will be closer to family with this move. "I’ve really enjoyed it," he said. "We’ve been able to maintain relatively stable budgets."
He is happy to have been a part of the planning the board has done in terms of its buildings and equipment. He said he thinks the roads have improved, as has equipment maintenance, and while there is disagreement on the cost of a new town garage -- voters said "no" to a bond in March -- most people now understand there is a need for one.
Bruder said he was approached about his new job this spring, but serious talks did not come until later. He said he made the select board aware of his intentions prior to this announcement.
Town Administrator Margy Becker sent an email to media Thursday saying the board is seeking people who wish to fill Bruder’s soon-to-be vacant seat. Interested parties may call Becker at 442-4030, or contact a member of the board. Letters can also be sent via email to email@example.com.
