BENNINGTON -- A Manchester man who was placed on probation two years ago for committing sex acts in front of a minor is being held on allegations that he had a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old girl.
Cody P. Shores, 19, pleaded not guilty Wednesday in Vermont Superior Court to four counts of sexual assault on a person under 16. He was placed under $10,000 bail, but had been being held since early August after his probation officer learned of the relationship. A condition of Shores’ probation is he not have contact with people under 18.
According to an affidavit by Vermont Detective Trooper Scott Dunlap, on July 31 he was told that a 15-year-old girl had disclosed to the Department of Children and Families that she was in a sexual relationship with Shores. She said she met him through a friend, and did not know his age at first, but did tell him she was 15. She said there were four occasions where she had sexual contact with Shores. The first was at a friend’s house where they were on a bed and he put his hand down her pants. This stopped when the friend entered the room. The second incident involved the same activity, only in a wooded area. It stopped when some people she knew came walking by. The third incident was at a house, and the final time occurred in the woods. Each time was the same type of activity as the first, she said.
The girl knew Shores was on probation when they met. She learned later, from him, it was for a sex offense. According to police she had told Shores she wanted nothing to do with him after learning of his sex offender status, but continued to have contact with him.
Police said they spoke to the girl’s parents, one of whom claimed Shores was told to stop being around the girl, as she was 15. The girl was sent to stay with another family member for a time to keep her and Shores apart, and one of the parents notified Manchester Police of the matter when she came back and the contact did not stop.
Dunlap wrote that he spoke to a witness who said she witnessed sexual contact between Shores and the girl. Other witnesses told police they had seen such activity, or been told by Shores or the girl about it. One witness said he knows Shores well and was told by him that the sexual activity was more involved.
According to Dunlap, Shores admitted to his probation officer that he had been dating a 15-year-old girl. Shores admitted to an incident happening in the woods.
