BENNINGTON -- A Petersburgh, N.Y., woman is facing charges that she left her two children, ages 4 and 9, unattended in a car for at least 10 minutes.
Elena Grenoble, 42, pleaded not guilty Monday in Vermont Superior Court to two misdemeanor counts of cruelty to a child under 10. She was released on conditions including she not leave her children unattended in an automobile.
According to an affidavit by Bennington Police Sgt. Michael Plusch, on June 27 he was dispatched to the parking lot of Walmart on Northside Drive for a report of two young children having been left unattended in a vehicle. Plusch wrote that he found the children and learned from them their mother had gone into Walmart. According to Plusch, he was with the children for five minutes until their mother, Grenoble, came out. Grenoble said one of her children had vomited on herself and because she had to go grocery shopping, she went to Walmart to buy the child a new outfit.
"I advised Elena that she cannot leave her kids unattended and she responded that it was only for five minutes," Plusch wrote. "I tried to explain the horrific consequences to her about what could happen and her response to this was that we are not in New Jersey."
Plusch said from the time he was dispatched to the time he met Grenoble was about 10 minutes.
