SHAFTSBURY -- Welcome to the 2013/2014 school year.
The staff at Shaftsbury Elementary School is busy preparing for the students’ arrival on Tuesday, Sept. 3.
There are two new staff members.
Tom St. Hilaire joins the school as a sixth grade teacher. St. Hilaire graduated from the State University Of New York at Cortland in 2011 with a bachelor’s of science in childhood education. He taught for two years at Sacred Heart Saint Francis De Sales in Bennington as a physical education, health and middle school science teacher. St. Hlilaire is also working on his master’s degree in teaching at the University of Saint Mary.
"I believe every student should leave my classroom with a positive outlook on school and education and that they will feel that they accomplished all they could to their best ability during the school year," said St. Hilaire.
Long-time local educator Laura Boudreau joins the school as a fourth grade teacher. She has 19 years of teaching experience in the Southwest Vermont Supervisory Union. She has a bachelor degree from the University of Vermont and a master’s from Southern New Hampshire University.
"I like to look at each child as an individual, and work to enhance their strengths and develop their weaknesses," said Boudreau.
According to Boudreau, Plato sums it up best: "In order for man to succeed in life, God provided him with two means, education and physical activity. Not separately, one for the soul and the other for the body, but for the two together. With these two means, man can attain perfection."
