GLASTENBURY -- Three hikers on the Long Trail required assistance off the mountain Friday during inclement weather, authorities reported over the weekend.
Vermont State Police said they responded to the report of hikers in distress in Glastenbury near the summit, after the three were caught in weather and deep snow that soaked all their gear. State police search and rescue dispatched a search manager to the area along with Vermont Fish and Wildlife and Bennington police.
Using snowmobiles, the wardens and officer reached the hikers by late afternoon. Police said there were no medical concerns with any of the three, identified as Sarah Madden, of Berkley, Calif., Joe Makucha, of Storrs, Conn., and Riley Kelleher, of Charlemont, Mass. The hikers were provided dry clothing and then assistance back to Somerset Road.
State police then provided transport back to Bennington. Authorities said they were reminding those engaged in outdoor recreation to be mindful of changing weather conditions, and the harshness of cold temperatures and still substantial snow pack at higher elevations.
