BENNINGTON -- As costs of education keep rising, the Bennington Area Chamber of Commerce continues to look for ways to help support local schools.
As part of the upcoming Catamount Prowl, the chamber is looking for sponsors to donate $300 to buy participating schools in the area "tabletop catamounts" -- smaller versions of the catamounts that will line the streets this summer -- that will be decorated by students enrolled in the schools.
Of the 20 participating schools and daycare centers, only four currently have sponsors. Among the remaining schools are Molly Stark Elementary, Pownal Elementary, The School of Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales, Mount Anthony Union Middle and High Schools, and others.
"Although the art teachers are going to be heavily involved in the process of decorating the tabletop catamounts, the students are going to be the artists," said Joann Erenhouse, executive director of the Chamber.
"After the tabletop catamounts are completed they will be on display in a gallery at the Bennington Center for the Arts," Erenhouse said.
"They will be auctioned off on October 26 at the final gala for the Catamount Prowl."
In looking for sponsors for the $300 catamounts, Erenhouse said, "if someone has a specific school that they would like to donate to, we can certainly make sure that their donation goes to that school. However, as only one tabletop catamount will be given to each school, those who want to donate to a specific school should call right away.
Anyone interested in donating may call the chamber at 447-3311.
