BENNINGTON -- A brush fire got out of control Saturday afternoon because of windy conditions before being knocked down by firefighters.
Bennington Rural Fire Chief Shawn Gardner said crews responded to the call on Chapel Road at about 3:30 p.m. He said the homeowner was attempting to burn a small ring around a pile of brush that was permitted and scheduled for Sunday, when the wind picked up and caught the pile on fire.
"Between the wind and the dry conditions" the fire spread, Gardner said, eventually encompassing about one acre including a portion of the adjoining property. Crews from Bennington Rural and Bennington Fire responded to the scene and had the blaze under control in about an hour. Pownal Valley and Pownal Fire stood on standby during the call.
