BENNINGTON -- The Echocardiography Lab at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center has received three-year accreditation by a nationally recognized group that reviews medical services' imaging programs.
According to SVMC spokeswoman Erica Cummings, the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC) has given its "seal of approval" to the hospital's echocardiography lab, which used sound waves to create images of patients' hearts for diagnostic purposes.
"Accreditation is the seal of approval from a national organization that SVMC echocardiography meets or exceeds all standards in excellence," said Dr. Scott Rogge, Dartmouth Hitchcock Putnam physician and medical director of SVMC Cardiology. "This is an ongoing process and we will continue to strive for state-of-the-art care."
According to Cummings, all aspects of the echocardiography lab's operations were reviewed by a panel of experts. In a release, she said accredidation is only given to labs that have been providing high quality patient care in comformance with national standards. Case studies are also reviewed.
Echocardiography is used to diagnose heart disease but also used to screen for problems so treatment can be given early. Patients are encouraged to check on a lab's accredidation before submitting to an echocardiography procedure, and the IAC provides such an accreditation.
