TROY, N.Y. -- A grand jury filed charges Thursday against a man who allegedly stabbed his ex-girlfriend at their home in Schodack.
The nine count indictment charges Jason Guynup, 29, with second-degree murder, and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, menacing, two counts of burglary, and three counts of endangering the welfare of a child. If convicted of the murder charge, Guynup could be facing 25 years in prison.
On Dec. 16, Guynup is believed to have stabbed Nikki Hart, his ex-girlfriend, at their home at 20 Bri-Lan Ave. Hart was transported to Albany Memorial Hospital and later died from her wounds.
After fleeing from the scene, Guynup crashed his truck into a tree along Route 9J. He was spotted by authorities walking along the road a short distance away and was apprehended after a foot chase.
The three charges for endangering the welfare of a child relate to Hart's two children with Guynup -- one-year-old Addison Joan Guynup and two-year-old Olivia Guynup -- and Hart's six-year-old step-daughter Emma.
During Guynup's arraignment Thursday, Judge Andrew Ceresia ordered stay-away orders in favor of Olivia, Addison, and Emma as well as the victim's sister, Ashley Hart.
Guynup was remanded without bail to the Rensselaer County Jail. He is being represented by attorney Stephen Coffey from Albany-based law firm O'Connell and Aronowitz, but was represented today by attorney Michael McDermott, of the same firm.
Hart's funeral was held Thursday morning at the Holy Spirit Church on Columbia Turnpike in East Greenbush.
