Woman in embezzlement case returns to prison
RUTLAND (AP) - A woman who served nearly three years in jail for taking $730,000 from her Vermont employer is heading back to prison for 10 months for covering up the sale of a Florida vacation home.
The Burlington Free press reports (http://bfpne.ws/RQK3Yr) 66-year-old Susan Emilo said she knew a court-imposed restitution order remained in effect, but instead opted to remodel a home in Myrtle Beach, S.C., using the proceeds of the Florida home sale in 2009.
The Emilos received $50,000 for giving up their half-share in the home in Rockwell Estates on Merritt Island.
Emilo was a part-time bookkeeper for an environmental consulting company in Lincoln. She was convicted of stealing money between 1992 and 2002. She pleaded guilty to mail fraud and other charges and went to prison in 2004.
Shumlin calls for food donations at holiday
BURLINGTON (AP) - Gov. Peter Shumlin is urging Vermonters to help the less fortunate by donating food, money and their volunteer time during the holiday season.
Shumlin made the comments Tuesday while he toured the Community Kitchen Academy job training program at the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf in Burlington.
The governor saud Thanksgiving is the time to raise awareness about Ve rmonters who are struggling to feed their families nutritious meals during this holiday season.
Shumlin says the Chittenden food shelf alone plans on helping 2,700 families on Thanksgiving and about 12,000 a year.
Supplemental assistance is required for many families to ensure they have adequate nutrition. Advocates estimate that one in every seven Vermont households faces what is known as "food insecurity."
Caregiver charged with Medicaid fraud
MONTPELIER (AP) - The Vermont attorney general's office says a caregiver has been charged with 17 counts of Medicaid fraud.
Michelle Forcier of Colchester was arraigned Tuesday in superior court in Windsor County.
The 42-year-old Forcier is accused of submitting false claims for payments in excess of $1,300 for care under the Vermont Developmental Services Medicaid waiver program that was not provided. She pleaded not guilty.
Skateboarder killed by truck in NYC
NEW YORK (AP) - Police say a skateboarder has been killed by a delivery truck at Manhattan's Union Square.
The NYPD says the 24-year-old victim fell off his skateboard and was hit by the truck at around 11:15 a.m. Tu e s d a y .
He was pronounced dead at a hospital.
The 35-year-old driver remained at the scene and was not charged.
