BENNINGTON -- Police said a School Street man who approached them with cocaine and cash in his pocket ran from them when being searched for weapons.
Daniel Hutchins, 20, pleaded not guilty Tuesday in Bennington Superior Court Criminal Division to a felony count of impeding a public officer and a misdemeanor count of possession of cocaine. He was released on conditions he not possess regulated drugs without a valid prescription and come to court at a later date.
According to an affidavit by Bennington Police Officer David Faden, on Oct. 5 at 10 p.m. he was dispatched to School Street for a reported loud argument. Upon arrival he saw Hutchins leave a building and come toward him with his hand in his pocket. According to Faden, he was informed by another officer that Hutchins is known to carry a gun.
Faden said he asked Hutchins to show him his hands but he did not. Faden wrote that he was patting Hutchins down to see if he had a gun when Hutchins asked why he was being searched. Faden said he explained to Hutchins what he was doing and Hutchins ran away. He was chased and brought to the ground by another officer.
According to Faden, three rocks of crack cocaine were found in Hutchin’s pockets along with a large sum of cash.
