BENNINGTON -- A Jeep rolled away from its owner and ended up in three feet of water at the intersection of Route 279 and Route 9 Wednesday.
Randy Niles, 74, said he left his 1983 Jeep Grand Cherokee running while he got out to get his mail. The vehicle began to move across Route 9 and over the Route 279 ramp.
"I went to try and grab it and get in but tripped instead," Niles said. "It kept rolling and jumped the curb."
The vehicle rolled into a drainage swale, where it was still running in three feet of water surrounded by cattails. The Bennington Fire Department and Bennington Police responded. Niles’ vehicle was towed out by All Service CITGO. Niles said he was not injured.
