RUPERT -- A 15-year-old led police on a high-speed chase Thursday night before losing control and driving into a field, where the vehicle struck a building and rolled over several times. Authorities said the juvenile was uninjured in the accident but is facing four charges as a result.
In a written release, Trooper Lewis Hatch reported the incident began when state police attempted to stop a vehicle in Rupert for multiple traffic violations Thursday night. The unidentified teen was driving on Vermont Route 153 at approximately 10 p.m. When police attempted to stop the vehicle, they said it took off at a high rate of speed, toward the New York state border.
After a 9.5-mile pursuit, the operator lost control of the vehicle. The car entered a field, struck an unoccupied building and "rolled over several times." Police said the teen was taken into custody at the scene of the accident. The teen was issued a juvenile citation to appear in Bennington Superior Court, Criminal Division, next month to answer charges, including excessive speed, negligent operation, attempting to elude a police officer, and operating a motor vehicle without the owner’s consent.
