BENNINGTON -- A man who police say was stabbed in a fight over the weekend was held without bail on Monday pending a hearing scheduled for the end of this week.

Michael A. Spangenberg, 22, of Hurley Lane, pleaded not guilty in Bennington Superior Court Criminal Division to two counts of second degree aggravated domestic assault in violation of an abuse prevention order, two counts burglary of an occupied dwelling, two misdemeanor counts of unlawful mischief, and simple assault.

According to an affidavit by Bennington Police Officer David Faden, on Sunday he was called to Depot Street at 1:49 p.m. for a reported stabbing. When he arrived he found Spangenberg walking away with blood on his back. Spangenberg told police he was stabbed by Miguel Maisonet and the night before had been bitten by Maisonet’s dog.

Faden said he spoke to Maisonet, who told him that Spangenberg had come into his home and attacked him as well as woman there, who had been a girlfriend of Spangenberg’s. Maisonet told police he had cleaned the knife with a towel and let them have both items.

Faden wrote that Spangenberg told them he had gone to Maisonet’s house the night before in search of his girlfriend. He said he found here there, but Maisonet attacked him when he opened the door. While Spangenberg was holding Maisonet against a wall, Maisonet’s dog attacked him, biting him about the legs. He said he then left and returned the next day to see if the dog had its shots. Spangenberg told police this was when Maisonet hit him with a chair and stabbed him in the back.

According to police, Maisonet’s children told them they witnessed Spangenberg come into the home and attack Maisonet and the woman. They said they spoke to at least two other witnesses who saw a dog attacking a man at Maisonet’s house and woman on the ground there crying.

The woman told police she encountered Spangenberg on Thursday and he destroyed a $250 pair of glasses belonging to her and ripped some of her clothing. She said on Saturday he threw her onto a porch hurting her leg, chest, and back, and was assaulted again on Sunday which hurt her lip.
