WOODFORD -- A two-story residence in the Woodford Lake Estates was deemed a total loss following a midnight fire over the weekend in which no one was injured.

The fire was initially reported at approximately 12:15 a.m. Sunday. Bennington Rural Fire Chief Joseph Hayes said the structure at 25 Simon Lane was fully involved by the time crews arrived, about 15 minutes later. "It takes time to get up the mountain," said Hayes, because of the incline and the weight of the fire trucks.

Once extinguished, about half the structure remained standing, and an excavator was called to knock down the remnants.

The single resident, a man and his dog, went to stay with a friend, the chief reported. Hayes said the cause of the fire appeared to be electrical.

Two other residences within 30 feet of the burned building were not damaged. Responding to the scene were Bennington Rural and Bennington Village Fire, Bennington Rescue, and Vermont State Police. The North Bennington Fire Department covered an assignment in Bennington.
