BENNINGTON -- A man accused of not complying with the state’s sex offender registry was held on $1,000 bail Friday after pleading not guilty to the charge.

State police said Robert J. Regina, 57, whose registered address is Paradise, Mont., was pulled over on Route 7A, after police received a tip he was in the area. According to the affidavit, Regina said he had a document from the 9th Judicial District in Freemont County Wyo., where he used to live, that bore the heading: "Order for early termination from sex offender registry" and was dated April 5, 2011.

Police said he was placed on the offender registry for a 2000 Florida conviction involving a lewd act in front of a minor. Police said that required him to register for life.

Regina told police he’d been living in Shaftsbury for the past two weeks.

Police in Manchester were first alerted to Regina being in the area after someone said they’d seen him near the Manchester Elementary School.
